Some thoughts on fear and the moon card. . .

What is that you’re most afraid of?  Can you name your fears?  Do they bubble up on your surface or are they too deep to find without some digging?  How might those things that you’re afraid of be acting out in your life choices – big and small?  And when they’re brought to the light of day, through conscious rather than emotional examination, are your fears real or imaginary?

While spending some time with the Moon card - #18, I started really thinking about fear.  It’s certainly everywhere.  It deeply influences our lives and often goes unacknowledged as the incredible motivator that it is.  One of the messages of the Moon card is that by naming our fears we help deflate them, make them more manageable.  Identifying what scares us allows us to take action against real threats rather than unconsciously reacting to those which are unreal.

While investigating your fears, try not to judge yourself or the situation or the people or things that you might be afraid of.  At least for the moment, just look at what they are and explore how they may have shaped and may still be shaping your life choices.  It’s fine if they do – as long as the fears are real.  If they’re not, you might want to start making some changes.  Do you really want to be directed by imaginary monsters? Even if they were real at some time in the past?

It takes courage to look our fears in the face.  But it feels so much better when we do.  According to the Tarot story, such examination draws towards us the energy of the next card in the major arcana - #19 – the Sun.  Through dredging up our shadows, we can discover liberation and perhaps finally celebrate life without fear.
